People Reaching Out promotes healthy communities by empowering youth to make healthy choices. We help to strengthen families to guide their children away from drugs and violence, and toward forming positive partnerships, with the goal of building a strong community.

We provide proven prevention strategies, aligned with best practice, science-based research programs. Our cross-age mentoring, youth development, family-strengthening counseling, coupled with community and coalition development, follow high-impact strategies that lead to results oriented outcomes.

For 30 years our work has been offered to both youth and families “free of charge”. We are supported by individual donor investment and public-private partnerships with foundations, corporations, private business, school districts, and government. The impact of our school-based afterschool programs is recognized by four school districts within the Sacramento region: Elk Grove Unified, Sacramento City Unified, San Juan Unified, and Washington Unified, as well as, the cities of Sacramento, West Sacramento, and Citrus Heights. Our community and coalition development work is accomplished in the Sacramento County communities of Arden Arcade and Valley Hi and extends through the Central Valley as far as Fresno.

Annually, People Reaching Out programs touch the lives of 24,000 youth and families and reach across a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds. Additionally, we provide universal parenting and family-strengthening counseling to immigrant communities through in-language workshops in Hmong, Spanish and Russian/Slavic.

Our Mission, to inspire, educate, and mobilize youth to build a healthier future for themselves, their families, and their communities, via strategy-based approaches to prevention ensures that our children and youth are equipped to define their own meaningful future.
